KwaZulu-Natal's balmy weather and golden beaches have traditionally been a magnet for tourists. Yet this exciting province is today as much a business destination as it is a holiday mecca.
Heavy and light industries abound, as do numerous retail and office developments. Durban and its surrounds have also built a proud reputation as a convention hub.
These developments promise excellent long-term returns and have generated strong interest in the marketplace.
One hundred hectares on the eastern side of the airport are currently being rezoned for the creation of a logistics park:
Environmentally friendly. This is a 'clean industry' site that will require developers to abide by certain environmental conditions. The growing importance of green issues makes this a key feature;
Addressing the space problem. The lack of suitable property within the city makes the logistics park an obvious option for developers and end-users;
Access to the entire transport system – one of the clearest indicators of future growth. The site is minutes from the airport and approximately 30 km from the harbour, and close to the road network. Significantly, it is only six hours by road – and less than an hour by air – from the huge Gauteng market;
Air traveller convenience. The proximity of the airport allows key executives to fly in and do business quickly.
In addition to the proposed logistics park on the eastern precinct, Airports Company South Africa has pockets of land for development on the western side. An area of approximately 5ha is immediately available for commercial development. These offer the same advantages in terms of location, and are also a highly attractive opportunity.
