Johannesburg, 27 June 2014 – Airports Company South Africa has revealed its integrated transformation programme aimed at showcasing a variety of business opportunities available at the company’s network of airports across the country.

Bongani Maseko, Chief Executive Officer of Airports Company South Africa, said the company is embarking on this process to raise broader awareness of business opportunities that are becoming available at the airports following the expiry of a large number of retail concessions that will go out to tender. The opportunities presented will offer a more diverse business community at the company’s airports.

“Airports Company South Africa airports are becoming vital retail centres and catalysts for economic growth. Each will be transformed into multi-faceted, world-class, global gateways for travel, trade and commerce. As a result, business opportunities abound.  It is imperative to broaden communication to potential bidders who would not have ordinarily known about the retail opportunities that exist at our airports,” said Maseko.

Retail opportunities per airport:

  • Total at O.R. Tambo International Airport: 104 opportunities, of which all are going out on tender by the end of the year. There will be 21 opportunities going out on tender this weekend.
  • Total at Cape Town International Airport: 39 opportunities, of which 27 will be going out on tender by end August and 12 of which will go out in July 2015
  • King Shaka International Airport opportunities will go out on tender next year.

Business owners are encouraged to participate in the tender for the 21 retail opportunities that will be advertised in national print newspapers on Sunday, 29 June 2014. The criteria is set in a way that if a concessionaire has more than two opportunities post bid award, the bid will be awarded to the next highest bidder with less than two opportunities post award.  Preference will be given to bidders who have one or less opportunities per airport and who meet all the qualifying criteria for any bid.

Available retail opportunities in future will include food and beverage, foreign exchange, confectionary, eyewear, books, homeward, massage services, shoes, sportswear, branded fashion apparel, electronics and pharmacy in both the international and domestic terminal areas.

Transformation initiatives are recognised and supported by various financial institutions who will offer the relevant advice and resources. Airports Company South Africa, through its regional airports, will also be on call to assist with additional information pertaining to their respective retail opportunities.

“Post this phase, we are looking forward to creating and facilitating enterprise development opportunities to broaden participation by smaller operators,” concluded Maseko.
