The Northern Cape town of Upington has a solid agricultural economy based on cotton, sultanas, raisins, export grapes and wine making. The region is home to the giant Orange River Wine Cellars Co-operative – the second largest in the world and a million tons of grapes are flown out of Upington International Airport every year.
Air traffic also caters for frequent cargo and business flights as well as regularly bringing tourists to the nearby Kgalagadi and Augrabies Falls Parks.

With the airport’s close proximity to the rest of sub-Saharan Africa and uncommonly long runway, plans are now underway to develop the airport into a major cargo hub. Property development opportunities will focus on land development for logistics services.
Upington has recently initiated a Solar Social Economic Zone (SEZ) which concentrates on the renewal energy developments. Upington International Airport is host to a recently completed and commissioned 10 MW Solar PV Installation over 20Ha of land.
The airport currently has an area of approximately 55Ha for the operation of a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility that will facilitate the storage and maintenance of aircraft. The warm and dry weather conditions of Upington are perfect for the facilitation of an MRO facility.
To complement the MRO operation and many others in the region, the airport has approximately 30Ha of zoned land for commercial development. With so much development land available around the airport, the area is envisaged to become a business and cargo hub.
Major benefits of the sites include:
Assured growth potential: The development of the cargo hub will lead directly to increased demand for logistics services;
Convenient access to roads: Unrestricted transport links to the sites lend greater efficiency to the sites’ operability;
Maximum flexibility: Tenants can specify requirements to optimise operating efficiency, further enhancing investment returns.
