Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is set to light up the festive season with its highly anticipated Christmas Lights activation, which will kick off on 2 December 2024. This exciting event, marked by the official switching on of the lights, will take place across all nine of ACSA's airports, creating a festive ambiance that enhances the airport experience for both travellers and visitors alike.
The Christmas Lights activation is part of ACSA's broader initiative to position airports not just as transit hubs, but as lifestyle and retail destinations. Inspired by the diverse cultures and landscapes of South Africa, the 2024 Christmas campaign adopts the theme "Christmas under the Sun". This theme reflects the warmth, vibrancy, and African heritage that make this season unique in Southern Africa. From the décor that draws inspiration from the South African landscape to the rich cultural diversity on display, ACSA's festive approach offers a refreshing take on the traditional Christmas experience.
"We are excited to unveil this year's Christmas Lights activation, which aims to create a memorable experience for our passengers, airport visitors, and our retail partners," said Ms. Laurene Less, ACSA's Group Executive: Corporate Services. "The festive season presents a wonderful opportunity to showcase the warmth and spirit of African culture while elevating the airport experience. This is not just about decoration – it's about creating a space that invites families to relax, shop, and celebrate the holidays together. We want to encourage people to see our airports not only as points of transit, but as vibrant places to shop, dine, and unwind."
The official switching on of the Christmas lights will take place simultaneously at all nine ACSA airports, with the highlight being the ceremony at O.R. Tambo International Airport (ORTIA), wherein ACSA CEO, Ms. Mpumi Mpofu will lead the lighting ceremony. In addition to the lights, several festive activities will be hosted across the airports to signal the start of the holiday season.
The 2024 Christmas campaign will also provide a boost to ACSA's retail partners, increasing foot traffic to the airports and giving passengers and visitors a unique, holiday-inspired shopping experience. The campaign is part of ACSA's broader strategy to enhance its infrastructure and commercial offerings over the next five years, in line with its capital expenditure plans.
"The Christmas decorations and activities are designed to offer something for everyone, whether you're a traveller on the go or a local looking to embrace the holiday spirit," said Ms. Less. "We aim to create an environment where people can relax and celebrate the season, making every visit to our airports feel like a special occasion."
As part of ACSA's commitment to enhancing the customer experience, the Christmas lights activation also highlights the company's continuous efforts to create engaging and memorable experiences for passengers, while boosting the visibility and appeal of its retail offerings. By transforming the airports into festive destinations, ACSA invites both locals and international visitors to experience the holiday season in a new light.
