​Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is once again proud to support the Smile Foundation's transformative efforts, as a dedicated team of medical professionals provide life-changing surgeries for children in need this weekend. ​

The second Smile Weekend of 2024 took place at the Provincial Hospital in Gqeberha today where 20 young lives were changed through corrective surgeries led by renowned Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Dr. Chris van der Walt.

This remarkable initiative, made possible through the selflessness of surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, and other medical staff who are volunteering their time over the weekend, will bring hope and healing to children with facial abnormalities and other complex medical conditions.

The team of healthcare professionals in Gqeberha chose to donate their time and expertise to make a profound difference in the lives of children who might otherwise not have access to the necessary medical care. Dr. Chris van der Walt, along with a team of 10 theatre nurses, anaesthetists, and surgical staff, performed a series of corrective surgeries for children facing severe medical challenges. Among the children benefiting from this initiative are:

• Sinethemba, a 9-month-old boy from Joubertina in the Eastern Cape, will undergo reconstructive surgery for a unilateral cleft lip. Sinethemba's previous surgery had to be delayed due to health complications, but with the help of this Smile Weekend initiative, he will finally receive the surgery he urgently needs. The procedure will restore the continuity of his lip, improve his aesthetic appearance, and most importantly, support his healthy speech development. Coming from a rural area with limited access to specialized medical care, Sinethemba's surgery would not be possible without the Smile Foundation's commitment to reaching children in remote areas.

• A young girl born with amniotic band syndrome, which led to lymphedema in her foot, will undergo a specialized "debulking" surgery. This critical procedure will help reduce swelling, allowing her to wear shoes for the very first time and giving her the chance to experience greater comfort and mobility. This surgery will also enable her to engage more fully in daily activities, providing her with the freedom to enjoy life like other children her age.

Since 2011, Airports Company South Africa has been a steadfast sponsor of Smile Foundation initiatives, working alongside the Foundation to improve the lives of South Africa's most vulnerable children.
