King Shaka International Airport celebrates 15 years of empowering travellers’ journeys

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) proudly commemorates the 15th anniversary of King Shaka International Airport (KSIA) today, 1 May 2025. This significant milestone marks KSIA's journey as a world-class travel hub, consistently delivering safe, reliable, and seamless service since its inauguration in May 2010. KSIA has been instrumental in driving regional tourism, facilitating vital trade, and fuelling economic expansion within the province. Its strategic location near Durban's vibrant coastline and rich cultural tapestry has established it as a primary gateway to the region.

Nkosinathi Myataza, Regional General Manager of King Shaka International Airport, highlights the airport's profound impact: "For us, travel transcends mere arrivals and departures; it's about fostering meaningful connections and crafting unforgettable experiences. Over the past 15 years, we have proudly facilitated millions of journeys, ensuring travellers feel secure and supported at every stage. We are deeply committed to being a trusted partner in their travel experience."

The airport's robust recovery post-pandemic underscores its resilience and importance. In the 2024–2025 financial year, KSIA recorded 40,935 aircraft movements, representing an impressive 81% recovery compared to pre-COVID levels. Passenger numbers also demonstrate a strong resurgence, reaching 5,042,922, an 83% recovery from the 2019–2020 figures. This steady upward trajectory since the notable rebound in 2021–2022 reflects KSIA's ongoing commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and fostering optimism for future growth.

"KSIA embodies more than just an aviation hub; it symbolizes progress and strategic foresight. Its evolution over the past 15 years is a testament to sustained investment and a dedication to excellence. By continually prioritizing innovation and infrastructure development, we are strategically positioned to meet evolving demands and drive inclusive economic advancement for the region." Adds Myataza.

The airport's integral role within the Durban Aerotropolis master plan and its active collaboration with the Aerotropolis Institute Africa further solidify its position as a catalyst in transforming KwaZulu-Natal into a dynamic and interconnected economic powerhouse.

"We extend our sincere gratitude to the countless travellers, dedicated partners, and committed staff who have been integral to our journey," concludes Myataza. As we celebrate this 15-year milestone, our focus remains firmly on the future, ensuring that King Shaka International Airport continues to deliver world-class experiences for generations to come.
