Airports Company South Africa is proud to announce the touch down of
Ethiopian Airlines’ first Boeing 787 Dreamliner at O.R. Tambo International
Airport earlier today. Ethiopian is the first airline outside of Japan to take delivery of the new
model, which it did at a handover ceremony on 14 August 2012 in Seattle
Washington. The new Dreamliner, which went into commercial service only in
October last year, will offer passengers a game-changing on-board
experience. “As the premier air transport hub for Africa, we’re exceptionally proud to be
hosting this new addition to the international flying experience,” says Unathi
Batyashe-Fillis, Manager: Communications and Brand Management at O.R. Tambo
International. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a long-range aircraft that seats between 210 and
290 passengers, depending on configuration. It is Boeing’s most fuel-efficient
model and, according to the manufacturer, consumes 20% less fuel than the 767,
which is of similar size. With its distinctive nose contour, four-panel
windshield and noise-reducing chevrons, this new generation of Boeing will bring
flair and excitement to the tarmac. “The new aircraft’s features will introduce passengers to a truly 21st
century flying experience. Passengers flying this type of aircraft expect a
smooth check-in and landing process, as well as a great airport experience, and
we are able to offer them just that. In partnership with Ethiopian Airlines,
O.R. Tambo will be giving travellers a real taste of Africa today,” says
Batyashe-Fillis, who also says that O.R. Tambo is ready and geared up for
Dreamliner. The airline will soon announce its first Dreamliner destinations, and O.R.
Tambo is at the top of the list.
