Johannesburg, 4 October – The 2014 OA Tambo Liberation Walk
took place at the Dries Niemandt precinct in Kempton Park earlier today.
Motivated by Oliver and Adelaide’s commitment towards education, the theme for
this year’s walk was ‘Education Liberates’. The event, which comprised of a
21.1 km run, as well as a 10 km walk and a 5 km fun walk, was officially opened
by Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Cllr Mondli Gungubele, Oliver Tambo Junior, and
Sports Minister, Fikile Mbalula respectively. Ms Bongiwe Pityi, General Manager of O.R. Tambo International Airport said:
“We are humbled to be a partner in this event, to promote education, which is
the legacy that Oliver Tambo left behind.” The Liberation Walk, which O.R. Tambo
International Airport sponsors, is held annually during the first weekend of
October, which celebrates the lives of two of Africa’s most passionate freedom
fighters - Oliver Reginald and his wife, Adelaide Tambo, is sponsored by. It
embodies the ideals of unity and patriotism, which are strongly associated with
the stalwarts’ legacy. “How marvelous it is, to see young and old spirits both running to the finish
line in honour of Adelaide and Oliver Tambo. It was wonderful to see, people
walking for education, a display of their achievements,” said Mavuso Msimang,
CEO of the Oliver & Adelaide Tambo Foundation. Giving the vote of thanks, Ms Pityi said, “The ideals that OR stood for of
education, the ability to challenge the status quo, and excellent work ethic and
discipline remain relevant, even in today’s society.” O.R. Tambo International
Airport continues to consistently work hard with the communities through various
educational initiatives to prepare the country’s future leaders. To this end,
the airport has donated a fully equipped science laboratory and continuously
provides children with school shoes and stationery packs, amongst others.” The event was well attended by South African celebrities and socialites. The
total value of this year’s prizes is estimated at R150 000 and proceeds from the
event will benefit the Foundation’s educational initiatives in underprivileged
