Airports Company South Africa says the country’s flagship airport O.R. Tambo
International Airport is well positioned to be a logistics and distribution hub
for air cargo. . “A combination of sufficient cargo capacity, strategic location, high levels
of connectivity, accessibility to major routes and world-class infrastructure
position O.R. Tambo International as a cargo and logistics super site,” says
O.R.Tambo International Airport General Manager Bongiwe Pityi. In a few days’ time, Air Cargo Africa 2015 will kick off, attracting
logistics and transport players from the rest of Africa and around the world.
The event, themed Air Cargo: Africa’s path to sustainable growth, takes place
from February 25 to 27 at Emperors Palace & Casino Resort, in Ekurhuleni,
east of Johannesburg. “Air Cargo Africa 2015 is an appropriate platform for air cargo players from
all over the world to assess the trade and investment opportunities that Africa
has to offer. It is O.R. Tambo International Cargo Division’s vision to attract
more air cargo traffic to maintain and grow our status as the logistics and
distribution hub for sub-equatorial Africa,” says Pityi. O.R. Tambo is Africa’s busiest airport and is a vital gateway for regional
and international air cargo. In 2014, it handled approximately 390 000 tons of
air cargo, while a total of 18 million passengers passed through the airport.

Airport is arguably the largest and busiest airport in the African continent.
The airport is also the biggest cargo airport in Africa with freight estimated
at over 400 000 tonnes per annum.
Major expansion projects have increased
the annual passenger handling capacity at O.R. Tambo International from 6,5
million in 1993 to a current 28 million.
The award-winning airport currently
processes over 19 million passengers annualy.
A recent Airbus forecast
recognises O.R. Tambo International Airport as the only mega city airport in
Africa, with more than 50 000 daily long-haul passenger flights carrying cargo
in their belly. Forecast to be a reality by 2032. About AIR CARGO AFRICA 2015 AIR CARGO AFRICA 2015, (25-27 February 2015) is the 3rd Biennial
International Air Cargo Event organised by STAT Times to showcase Africa’s air
cargo potential on a global scale and provide a platform for the players from
different sectors of the industry to meet and discuss trade opportunities. In
its past two editions held in Nairobi and Johannesburg, the exhibition has seen
